Consider the following questions and jot your thinking in your travel log.

When people develop settlements, or specific locations in which they are going to live, the first thing they have to do is to make sure that people's basic needs are being met. It is important for everyone to have enough food and water, as well as shelter and clothing to protect them from weather and other dangers. As a group of people in a certain place get bigger, they need to have more and more food to meet the needs of all the people. However, if they find a good system for getting food, either by hunting, farming, or both, eventually they will have enough people to assign some people to get food, while other people are freed up to do other kinds of jobs.
When we study civilizations we want to learn many different things about how the people lived and what kinds of jobs they were able to do, and what discoveries they were able to make.
What questions come to mind about how a civilization, such as Ancient Egypt, developed?
(example: How did they get their water for drinking and watering crops? How did they prepare food?)
- What kinds of things can happen when everyone in a group has to work on meeting people's basic needs?
- What other kinds of jobs do you think people may start to have?
